A Journey Across Japan!

Hello everyone! My name is Ryan Newburn. I am 23 years old and live in Omaha, Nebraska. I have a dog named Caesar and…..blah blah blah I could go on and on with all of these boring facts about me, but instead why don’t we just skip over to the 3 most interesting facts about me, shall we?

1. I used to be morbidly obese, weighing in at a whooping  320lbs! I absolutely hated what I had let myself become, so one day I decided that enough was enough. I started eating healthy and running…A LOT! I ended up losing 140lbs over the course of 3 years of hard work and dedication. I am now in the best shape of my life!

2. I am a nerd. And what do nerds like me do? They play card games competitively! With that being said, that brings me to my 2nd fun fact: In 2009, I represented my country in the Yu-gi-oh World Championships in Tokyo, JAPAN<<(hint for what’s to come) after getting 3rd place out of  1200 participants at the United States National Championships.

3. Last but not least, the most important interesting fact about me, and the reason you are here is!………

Approximately 4 months from now on March 4th, 2014, I am going to quit my job, sell everything I own, and travel to the land of the rising sun, AKA JAPAN!!!

Once I arrive, I will first attend my good friend Satoshi Kato’s wedding in Kobe, Japan.

I will then proceed to Cape Sata, the very southern tip of Japan. From there I will walk the entire length of the Japan-south to north (a little over 2,000 miles) all the way to Cape Soya, the northern tip. That’s right folks I AM GOING TO WALK ACROSS AN ENTIRE COUNTRY! And the best part is, all you AWESOME people will get to experience what I experience every step of the way by following my day to day blog.

This map is of Tyler MacNiven's journey across Japan, it simulates roughly the distance I will cover on my walk.

The reason I am doing this is….because I want to!  But I am also going to do it for another reason. I want to help people, but more specifically I want to help obese people struggling with their weight, because it’s who I used to be and I know how hard it is to be overweight. With that being said, I will be walking across Japan to combat obesity! It will be my goal to set up some sort of way to raise money on my walk, then donate it all to a charity that helps people struggling with weight loss.

So there you have it! Just months from now I, Ryan Newburn, will begin my adventure across the world, starting with Japan! It has always been my dream to travel the world, and this is where I’m starting. I’m going to get EVERYTHING that I want out of life, or die trying! Wish me luck!

  1. Good luck! I just heard about your trip from Steve Takechi. As you know, Omaha has a sister city in Shizuoka (from 1965). Will you go through Shizuoka? Let me know. Someone could meet you if you would like.
